EasyCap install for capturing Wii Games

If you have just purchased a EasyCap to record games on your Wii, here is quick guide to getting it up and running very quickly. A few extra Items you will want to purchase are 2 or 3  phono splitters
for this tutorial i will use just 2 splitters.

This will enable you to play the console on your TV whilst recording the game on your laptop or PC

phono splitters

phono splitters

2 sets of phono extension cables

phono extension leads

phono extension leads

Now from the Easycap connect 1 set of the phono extension leads to the correct colours yellow on yellow for Video the other end connects to 1of the phono splitters

Repeat with the white cable and the other cable splitter, itshould now look like below

phono to splitter

phono from easycap to splitter

take the second set of phono extension cables and connect yellow(video) to the splitter, the white cable (audio) connects to the other splitter with the white cable

phono leads to splitter

both phono leads connected to splitter

The other end of the extension cables goes to your TV, select the correct channel for the AV leads. Now you will need to connect the Wii AV cables to the splitter, following the same trend as before yellow (video) to the splitter with the other video cables, and white (audio)cables to the splitter with the white cables connected. You should now have this setup below

3 AV cables connected to the splitter

3 AV cables connected to the splitter

Now power on your Wii, you should see the picture on your TV screen, check you are on the correct channel for the AV cables.

If your based in the UK make sure the WII is set to PAL 50hz

Launch the Ulead software and follow the following steps

click capture

click capture

select capture video

click capture video

click options, select video and audio capture settings

audio and video property settings

For PAL systems make sure you have these settings

Check the following is the same aswell

Check the the capture tab has the same settings

If you have any problems with setting this up on your wii feel free to leave comments i will try and resolve the problems your having

Hi there! Thank you for the wonderful information! I’ve only just received my own copy of the easycap, and am having a unique problem I believe no-one else is. I have a UK Wii a UK Gamecube and a UK ps2. All of these work well in PAL ofcourse. I’ve connected up my Easycap, and I can record sound and video using windows movie maker without a problem for PAL. The problem is when I try and record my US and Japanese NTSC games. I can record sound without a problem, but the video I simply cannot. I am using windows XP (as vista doesn’t seem to even begin to want to look at the Easycap install CD). Is there a driver which I need for the Easycap which can help in this pal–>ntsc conversion which I do with the freeloader…I bought my easycap hoping to upload some videos of my imported games to youtube – however by the looks of things I may have wasted my money and time. Can someone please help? I’m almost at my wits end…

I’ve played around with some of the settings, and the only things I’ve been able to see in windows movie maker (I’ve tried with Debut video capture and also virtualdub as well – still no luck) are that the different formats of PAL_B –> PAL_F only pick up the signal when the consoles are loading up – then when I change the settings as the ntsc formats are playing, the NTSC M and NTSC M_J and PAL_M all say they have a signal – but there is no picture at all (just a black window). I’m curious about the conversion between the two, since I’ve tried it with only the easycap plugged directly into the game consoles, also trying with the y-splitters I have – and even the TV out RCA plugs I have on my tv – all without any success. Any light you might have would be deeply and sincerely appreciated.

    Kind Regards,
    Liam

  12. Ollie Evans Says:

Just connected my xbox in the same way you have connected your wii.

The problem ive got is that I have no sound and the video is in 4:3 not widescreen. (This happens even when I start UleadStudio at 16:9 at the main menu)

Also for some reason 1 minute of film is about 1.5GB of memory.
Yer it is great quality but I really dont want the file size that much and thats with no sound. (thats at quality of 50%)

    Any ideas.

    Thanks

Hi – I’m using vista with easycap/ulead studio. I get a good picture of my wii game in the window but when I press capture – the recommended resolution appears not to be supported by the bit rate video download. even when I reduce the resolution the default rate will not work. I cannot find how to change the bit rate in options. When I reduce the resolution even further it looks like it is going to tape and then a get the message ‘cannot start the capture graph?’

    any ideas?

  17. Michael Jones Says:

    Hi

    Great article! Thanks.

I use the easyCap to record Wii games to review on a blog I am planning.

So far I am getting it to record OK (with some trial and error) and get get fairly good quality video with audio. I can add a spoken commentary in Ulead Video.

However, I would like to be able to record the video of the game, the audio form the game and a spoken commentary AT THE SAME TIME! Is that too much to ask?

I have an ordinary headset microphone I would like to use to record the commentary – or I have a USB webcam with a built-in microphone that I can use if necessary.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

to get better sound quality, remove the black shell from the actual easycap. it makes the device overheat and it makes the sound quality all scratchy

  28. Tyler Says:

Michael Jones: Why can’t you just record the commentary as normal through your mic using a different software (such as Audacity), then overlay it onto the recorded video afterwards?

  29. Luke Says:

Couldn’t you just use a RCA Y-Splitter? connecting the wii to the female side and the esaycap and tv to the other side?
